  9.     Although  this  file  has  been  checked for errors, I cannot be held

  13. -+- Introduction -+-
  14.  
  15. This is a text file which details how to simply maintain and protect your
  16. Amiga and its peripherals.
  17.  
  18. Its very simple, and is a preventative thing you should use.
  19.  
  20.  
  21. -+- Amiga Maintenance -+-
  22.  
  23. * Don't leave your Amiga on all the time.
  24.  
  25. * Keep drinks away from your Amiga, if any liquid is spilled on the Amiga
  26.   quickly get a dry cloth and wipe as much of the liquid as you can.
  27.  
  28. * The Amiga gets dusty.  If you need to wipe it, wipe it with a damp soft
  29.   cloth or tissue.
  30.  
  31. * Don't hit keys too hard on the keyboard, eventually the keys will stop
  32.   working.
  33.  
  34. * Try to avoid repeated unplugging and plugging in any of the ports.  The
  35.   ports are fragile.  It may be an idea to get some port switchers.
  36.   These allow you to have two things connected at once and then at the
  37.   flick of a switch choose which of the two things you want to use.
  38.  
  39. * Don't cover your Amiga while your using it as it needs to have
  40.   somewhere to get rid of extra heat.
  41.  
  42.  
  43. -+- Floppy Disk Maintenance -+-
  44.  
  45. * Do not take the disk out of the drive while it is accessing, you may
  46.   damage your disk drive and you'll probably kill your disk.
  47.  
  48. * Do not reset your Amiga while something is being saved to disk.  You
  49.   will probably damage the disk.
  50.  
  51. * Get a disk fixer such as FixDisk, DiskSalv or QuarterBack Tools.
  52.  
  53. * Virus check your disks occasionally, otherwise they could be infected
  54.   and actually destroy all the information on a disk.
  55.  
  56. * Do not prod the disk surface you will probably corrupt some of the
  57.   data.
  58.  
  59. * Keep your disks out of direct sun light.
  60.  
  61. * Do not flip the metal cover too much.  The small spring in it can't
  62.   stand much force.
  63.  
  64. * Don't leave your disks near magnets e.g.  on top of a TV or speakers
  65.   because the magnets can mess up your data.
  66.  
  67. * Try not to smoke near your Amiga because the dust particles can get
  68.   onto disks from inside the disk drive.
  69.  
  70. * If you can buy some disk boxes for your disks.  They keep your disks in
  71.   order and they also protect them.
  72.

  74. -+- Hard Drive Maintenance -+-
  75.  
  76. * When the hard drive is accessing or saving information do not reset or
  77.   switch off your Amiga.  Otherwise (especially if your saving
  78.   information) you will get a disk error which may ruin some information
  79.   or in the worst case harm your hard drive permanently.
  80.  
  81. * Get a disk fixer such as FixDisk, DiskSalve or QuarterBack Tools.
  82.  
  83. * If you find your hard drive seems to be slower than before use a disk
  84.   reorganiser to bring it back up to speed.  Such as QuarterBack Tools or
  85.   ReOrg.
  86.  
  87. * Try to back-up your hard disk because if something bad happens to it
  88.   you mat loose some information.  At the very least back-up the
  89.   information which cannot be replaced.
  90.  
  91. * Never open your hard drive up, its precision built equipment.  A single
  92.   grain of pollen can (amazingly) seriously damage it.
  93.  
  94.  
  95. -+- Monitor Maintenance -+-
  96.  
  97. * Don't scratch the screen as scratches reflect light and makes the
  98.   monitor less easy on the eye.
  99.  
  100. * Don't leave the same image on a monitor for a long time because it can
  101.   eventually burn into the screen and leave a constant ghost like image.
  102.   If you leave your monitor on for long times with the same image use a
  103.   screen banker which will display a blank screen after a while when
  104.   the computer hasn't been used.
  105.  
  106. * Don't rest drinks on your monitor, if it spills your monitor will
  107.   probably be damaged.
  108.  
  109. * As monitors attract dust you are going to have to clean the screen.
  110.   Clean  the  screen  with either a damp tissue or preferably a damp soft
  111.   cloth to avoid scratches.
  112.  
  113.  
  114. -+- Mouse Maintenance -+-
  115.  
  116. * Use a mouse mat.  It helps to stop fluff and gunge getting up to the
  117.   rollers and making your mouse less responsive.
  118.  
  119. * Should you find your mouse becoming less responsive clean the rollers.
  120.   Do this with a soft cloth or cotton bud with a little white spirit on
  121.   it.
  122.  
  123. * To clean the mouse ball use a damp tissue or soft cloth.
  124.  
  125.  
  126. -+- Printer Maintenance -+-
  127.  
  128. * It is best to switch on your printer before your Amiga, because with
  129.   some printers switching them on resets it.
  130.  
  131. * When not in use close all the openings that you can to your printer.
  132.   And put a dust cover over it if you do not use it much.
  133.  
  134. * Try to use a dust cover, especially on dot matrix printers, which seem
  135.   to get dustier.
  136.  
  137. * With 24 pin dot matrix printers make sure you get the right printer
  138.   ribbons.  If you use the thicker nine pin printer ribbons the pins
  139.   of your 24 pin printer ribbon can snap off.
  140.  
  141. * Clean dust out of printers with a slightly damp cloth or tissue.  Get
  142.   to nooks and crannies with a damp cotton bud.  BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN
  143.   CLEANING OUT YOUR PRINTER YOU CAN EASILY SNAP A PIN OR OTHERWISE DAMAGE
  144.   IT.
